Torii Arm Chair

Douglas fir, 25 x 25 x 36

Torii Arm Chair is derived from lines and structure in traditional Japanese temple gates. Minimal vertical posts support sweeping, metaphorically weightless, horizontal lines of the lintels. Back panels are fluidly joined and shaped into the rear legs while front legs rely on tongue and groove to create a piece devoid of metal hardware. A transparent wax finish enhances natural grain figuration of 150 year old fir.

Torii Side Chair

Douglas fir, 25 x 25 x 36

Torii Side Chair is a second exploration of traditional gate form. Back panels are modified to attach to rear legs with a butt joint and screws. This projects splats further forward into space, preserves an unbroken arch across entire lower edge, and sets crisp straight edges along back legs. The rear vertical edge of front legs have a more distinct line of transition into seat edge.

Occasional Chair

walnut with leather upholstery, 26 x 24 x 29

Occasional Chair is inspired by a 1950's Brown-Saltman chair that incorporates cross-legged design into a simple construction accessible to mass production techniques. This piece extrapolates the general sensibilities of the original through the lens of the American craft movement.  Emphasis is on flowing visual lines, contrasting soft and hard edges, seamless joinery, and the inherent walnut grain patterns.

Crescent Bench

ipe, 62 x 22 x 18

Crescent Bench is a commemorative commission intended to integrate with a Japanese inspired garden. A koi pond spanned by a slat bridge determined the overall aesthetic. The bridge’s reflection on the pond surface transformed vertical railing and slats into a horizontal perspective captured in the bench curvature.

Woven Seat Dining Chair

white oak with Danish cord seat, 19 x 22 x 37

Woven Seat Dining Chair pictured below is from a set of eight. Classical country form is blended with contemporary seamless joinery in the stiles. Seats are hand woven in style of 60’s modern Scandinavian forms.

Arch Back Chair

walnut, 22 x 21 x 3

Arch Back Chair is a second exploration of the forms and aesthetic of a 1950’s Brown-Saltman occasional chair. Eliminating the upholstery and central vertical back support of previous versions creates a minimal structure. Visual attention focuses on flow lines connecting the components as well as the open structural spaces.

Oak Occasional Chair

California black oak, leather upholstery, 26 x 24 x 29

Oak Occasional Chair is the first design to utilize one-hundred and fifty year old California black oak sustainably harvested from La Dorada Forest Preserve in Foresthill, CA. The grain character is quite pronounced throughout the lumber so asymmetry was emphasized in the design. Soft, organic surfaces merge into sharply defined profiles and then back to rounded edges, much like the transitions of light penetrating the dense forest itself.

Python Burl Coffee Table

California black oak, 48 x 24 x 16

Python Burl Coffee Table uses crotch wood from black oak providing amazing snakeskin figuring enhanced with resin fill. The wildness on top is contrast to the geometric transitions in base from thin to thick along the length and across longitudinal sections.

Butterfly Back Chairs

California black oak, 20 x 23 x 33

The pair of chairs is composed from La Dorada Forest Preserve black oak. Wild figuring is the quintessential quality of black oak: one is python skin grain and the second is a peacock grain. Design lines are minimal and visually allow the back panel to float.

Butterfly Back Occasional Chair

claro walnut, 28 x 25 x 33

Butterfly Back Occasional Chair is iteration from original 2018 accent chair. A scoop seat emphasizes flowing lines throughout the form in addition to increasing light refraction on grain figuration. Rosewood inlays play on the Butterly theme.

Ray Base Accent Table

claro walnut, 24 x 22 x 19

Ray Base Accent Table presents the technical challenge of joining components with displacement along all three axes. Mortise and tenon joints hold top and shelf in position without hardware. Complex construction within a simple form.

3-Drawer Chairside Chest

spalted maple, white oak, walnut, 28 x 23 x 25

3-Drawer Chairside Chest is design to utilize a gorgeous gift of material from my son Tyger. Each side becomes an abstract painting onto itself. Quarter round drawer openings match top and bottom edges of drawer boxes and side panels. Lathe turned custom walnut pulls.
