Ikebana Bowl

ipe, 53 x 10 x 3.5

Ikebana Bowl pays homage to the ceramic work of Sueharu Fukami. Aggressive edges set the work distinctly apart from the environment while simultaneously allowing surfaces to guide the eye beyond those boundaries. The form is an unexpected outcome resulting from ipe material salvaged from the inner curve of the Crescent Bench. Redwood presentation box is included.

Moon Bowl

black walnut, 24 x 24 x 4

Moon Bowl is the joy of discovery through outboard lathe turning. Wood is essentially a living gemstone. As layers peal away, figuring in material is unexpectedly exposed and polished into full display. Preserving and incorporating grains, rough edges and flaws is an exploration of natural beauty.

Beam Bowl

ipe, 60 x 3 x 3

Beam Bowl is the second exploration of forms inspired by ceramics of Sueharu Fukami. Razor thin profiles and flow lines create near two dimensional perspective; a propeller arrested in full motion. Yet, visual sense continues on centrifugal path outwards. There is additional contrast juxtaposing weight one would expect holding a piece of very dense ipe versus the feather light structure from walls 3/16” inch in thickness. Pine presentation box is included.

Oval Bowl

reclaimed redwood, 11 x 5 x 7

20 Penny Bowl

reclaimed redwood, 26 x 12 x 5

20 Penny Bowl is old growth redwood recycled from a 100 year old Oregon water tower. Rust stained holes remaining from iron nails used in construction become a decorative surface element. Presentation box from an amalgamation of previous endeavors included.

Symphony Bowl

claro walnut, 51 x 12 x 3

Symphony Bowl uses the outside slice of sap wood from a walnut log milled into square prior to slicing into planks. This highly elongated board determined the final shape. There is a vivid contrast between sunburst figuration and an integral abstract pattern from worm activity. Presentation box is oak and walnut.

Prelude Bowl

claro walnut, 46 x 10 x 2

Prelude Bowl comes from outside slice on opposite side of walnut log from Symphony Bowl . The elongation and curvature of the blank is reflected in the final shape of bowl. The abstract pattern from worm tracks on the highly figured surface reminds one of both Japanese hiragana calligraphy and stencil sheets of katakana used in traditional textile printing. Presentation box is madrone and ipe.

Lambda Bowl

black oak, 31 x 10 x 3

Lambda Bowl form comes from an illustration to conceptualize Einstein’s principle of mass bending space . The laminated oak allows a deeper core to emphasize the asymmetric oval and hard edge profiles on underside to create greater projection of form along the axis. These sharp lines contrast to the natural irregularities of a pepper wood jita. Presentation box is luan ply and walnut.
